MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Monday paid tribute to US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away Sunday at the age of 100.

"Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States was a humanitarian who practiced what he preached," Marcos said in a statement on X.

"Guided by his faith, he was a servant leader who pursued peace in places torn by war and prosperity in societies broken by want," Marcos added.

During his presidency, Carter struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis but brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.

Marcos said Carter fought for "universal values" that were embraced by "people everywhere, including Filipinos, as the cornerstone of a better, kinder society they deserve to live in."

"He was a model of the power to do good, with the benefit of public office or bereft of it, driven, not by politics nor personal gain, but by pure love to one’s fellowmen," Marcos added.

US President Joe Biden remembered Carter as "a statesman, a humanitarian.. and a dear friend."
