Domingo/Senate Social Media Unit</em></span></span></span>MANILA — Senate President Francis &quot;Chiz&quot; Escudero on Tuesday discouraged his colleagues from talking about the impeachment complaint filed against Vice President Sara Duterte at the House of Representatives as senators may serve as &quot;judges&quot; should the move prosper. </div><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2024/12/2/-emb-vp-sara-duterte-faces-impeachment-complaint-1518">VP Sara Duterte faces impeachment complaint</a></div><p>&quot;In light of this development, I reiterate my call to my colleagues in the Senate to refrain from making any public comments or statements regarding the allegations in the complaint’s articles of impeachment,&quot; Escudero said.</p><p>&quot;Should the Senate be called upon to act as an impeachment court, any perception of bias or pre-judgment would undermine not only the integrity of the impeachment trial but also the public’s trust in the Senate as an institution,&quot; he added.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2024/12/3/will-impeach-bid-vs-vp-sara-duterte-prosper-0903">Will impeach bid vs VP Sara Duterte prosper?</a></div><p>Under the 1987 Constitution, the Senate shall have the sole power to try and decide all cases of impeachment.  </p><p>Escudero explained that while impeachment is often described as a political exercise, it is crucial that members of the Senate approach it with the impartiality and objectivity.</p><p>The Senate President also noted that political divisions caused by an impeachment should not hamper their pending legislative work.</p><p>&quot;[W]e must not allow this to detract from the pressing legislative work that lies ahead. We have a duty to enact laws that respond to the needs of our people, address urgent national concerns, and strengthen our republic,&quot; he said.</p><p>Echoing Escudero&#x27;s call was Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino.</p><p>&quot;Hindi dapat mag-comment ang myembero ng Senado. Kasi kung sakaling makarating po ito sa Senado, kami ang impeachment judge. So, we should not comment on something that we will decide. So, para po maging ethical at maka-alinsunod sa rules, ay hindi dapat po mag-comment kahit sino Senador. Kasi po, kagaya po ng kayo po, pwede ba nyo interviewin ng RTC judge? Judge, anong gagawin nyo sa kaso? Hindi naman pwede ganon. Pwede nyo bang interviewin ng isang Supreme Court Justice? Justice, anong tingin nyo sa kaso? Yung po ay dinidesisyusyonan ng sang ayon sa facts at sang ayon sa batas. Kasama na rin doon yung form and substance. So, unethical for us to comment on this.
