MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday assured Filipinos that Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) member services will not be affected by the decision to cut government subsidy to the state health insurer.

The Philippine leader said this as he was asked to comment on the announcement of House Speaker Martin Romualdez that lawmakers are studying the possible year-long suspension of the payment for Philhealth premiums, as they look into whether the agency is financially stable enough to support such a move.

The President meanwhile said that despite fears over how a zero-subsidy for PhilHealth, the government is committed to further expand the benefits to members.

“[N]apaka-simple lang ng guarantee ko: Kahit na subsidy, kahit walang subsidy, kahit anong contribution, all of these issues — hindi mababawasan ang serbisyo ng PhilHealth, hindi mababawasan ang bayad ng PhilHealth sa insurance claim," he said.

He said PhilHealth benefits are even expected to expand and improve.

“So, I would like to just assure everybody, huwag niyong inaalala na mababawasan ang serbisyo kahit na kanino. Para sa senior, para sa mga mahirap, para sa middle class, walang mababawasan kahit isang kusing."

(Do not worry that your benefits will go down. For seniors, for the poor, for the middle class, benefits will not be decreased by even a single cent)

Marcos Jr. as well as lawmakers supportive of the zero subsidy have said that PhilHealth has around P500 billion in reserve funds that it can use for members' needs.
