MANILA (UPDATED) - President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday said the public will get free train rides on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 on Friday, December 20. Malacanang announced the public will get free train ride in LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3 on Friday, December 20.

He made the announcement through on social media.

The government is expecting at least 1.1 million passengers, the highest ridership this year.

“Ang inisyatibong ito ay isang simpleng paraan upang maibsan ang gastos ng ating mga kababayang abala sa paghahanda para sa Pasko. Nawa’y magdulot ito ng ginhawa at maramdaman ng lahat ang malasakit ng pamahalaan ngayong kapaskuhan,” Marcos Jr. said.

Transportation Sec. Cesar Chavez said the free rides will be available from the opening until the closing of train operations on Friday.

He said the Palace picked Friday since it is expected to be the busiest day this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation also said it is waiving toll fees on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

The Manuel V. Pangilinan-owned firm said motorists can pass through the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), NLEX Connector, Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway (CAVITEX), and the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) from 10 p.m. on December 24, till 6 a.m. on December 25.

They can again pass toll free from 10 p.m. on December 31, till 6 a.m. on January 1, 2025.

“Family time is priceless, especially during the holidays. Offering toll-free access is our humble gift to families who wish to maximize their time together,” Pangilinan said.

Both toll operators reminded drivers to make sure there is enough balance in their RFID accounts to prevent delays at tollgates.

SMC also appealed to motorists for patience amid the expected heavy traffic leading to the holidays.

“We advise them to plan their trips ahead and allot more time for travel, to make sure they arrive at their destinations on time,” the company said.
