Brazen crimes that included road rage, abduction, and fatal shootings gripped the nation this year.

Here are the most-read crime stories on the ABS-CBN website in 2024. 

 

 

On May 29, 2024, a family driver was killed in a road rage incident on the southbound lane of the EDSA Ayala tunnel in Makati City. 

Gerrard Raymund Yu, the driver of a black Mercedes Benz, was accused of shooting dead 65-year old Aniceto Mateo.

The Southern Police District said initial investigations showed that the incident stemmed from a road rage altercation, “which escalated to a fatal shooting."

 

On November 3, 2024, authorities reported that a Cadillas Escalade with plate No. 7 allegedly tried to run over a female traffic enforcer. This was after the driver of the SUV was caught using the bus lane.

The incident sparked controversy as senators are the only government officials authorized to use "7" protocol plates.


A nurse was shot dead after he tried to help a man who figured in a motorcycle accident in Caloocan City in May.

A construction worker came to rescue the victim but he, too, was shot dead.

A Chinese was caught on CCTV shooting dead a fellow Chinese inside a hotpot restaurant in Makati City. Two suspects were eating with the victim and a couple of companions inside a VIP room of the restaurant.

After a heated argument, one of the suspects stood up, fired his gun in the air before repeatedly shooting the drunken victim several times. Police suspected the incident might have been connected to a nearby POGO.

 

In August 2024, a female tourism student was reportedly abducted while on her way to a friend in Balut, Tondo. The 20-year-old girl frantically sent messages to her relatives, asking for help. The victim was later caught on CCTV in Brgy. 334 running barefooted, fleeing her alleged abductors.

 

A couple was charged with murder for allegedly killing their fellow policeman inside Camp bagong Diwa.  One of the suspects, shot his fellow officer after he caught caught the victim supposedly having an affair with his wife. The suspect later dismembered the victim's body for disposal.

 

A 14-year-old boy allegedly killed his half brother in Lapu-Lapu City last May. The suspect aged 14 reportedly grabbed a rock and hit his 5-year-old sibling in the head.  The older brother then allegedly pushed the victim underwater, drowning the latter.

Controversial baller John Amores got himself into trouble again for allegedly shooting at a fellow basketball player after a game in Lumban, Laguna in September. The incident was caught on CCTV.  Amores and his brother surrendered to police and were later released on bail.

 

In June, a beauty contestant and her Israeli fiance' went missing in Tarlac after inspecting a land they were interested in buying. After two weeks, the bodies of Geneva Lopez and Yitzhak Cohen were found. Two former police officers were arrested in connection to the murder that was linked to a land dispute.

 

Four police officers got involved in a shootout at the parking lot of a mall in Calamba, Laguna in April 2024. Two of the officers allegedly caught their respective spouses, also policemen, in an intimate situation at the parking lot. A confrontation ensued, leading to a firefight.
