MANILA — Filipina death row convict Mary Jane Veloso will head home to the Philippines from Indonesia on Wednesday, Dec. 18, an official said Monday.

Indonesia's Deputy Coordinator of Immigration and Corrections Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram confirmed the development in a press conference.

Veloso — who was arrested and sentenced to death in 2010 for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage — was transferred to a facility in Jakarta from Yogyakarta over the weekend.

The move is an expected precursor to Veloso’s flight back to the Philippines after 14 years of incarceration in Indonesia.

Several officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) are set to travel to Jakarta on the evening of December 16 to finalize the prisoner transfer arrangement for Veloso.

The Philippines will shoulder all costs for Veloso’s repatriation, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega earlier said.

“Hindi na natin pinapunta yung family [sa Indonesia]… Ang the best diyan ay salubungin na lang nila [sa Pilipinas],” he said.

Reports of Veloso’s transfer to a Philippine prison started earlier this year, shortly after new Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto rose to power.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and other officials welcomed the transfer as Veloso would be spared from execution as the Philippines does not have a death penalty law in place.

Veloso had called her transfer a “miracle” as she was supposed to be executed in 2015, but was spared as the recruiters who allegedly stashed the illegal drugs in her luggage were arrested shortly before she was supposed to be executed by a firing squad.
