MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants to be more open and accessible to the media as he underscored the need to establish credibility in combating fake news and misinformation.

The president said this as he emphasized the importance of having a "symbiotic" or interdependent relationship between the government and the fourth estate.

“In government, we could not do our jobs if you’re not there. And I think that goes both ways," Marcos said before the members of the media in an event on Monday, Dec. 16.

“At times, there are things you bring up to us na baka hindi namin nakita, o baka hindi namin naramdaman, o baka hindi namin napag-isipan, and we should be looking at it,” he elaborated.

Marcos Jr. expressed his intention to "evolve" the dynamics between the government and media by being transparent about the administration's decision-making processes on policies and issues.

“Sometimes, and I will admit to this, there is a tendency for us to try and structure the releases, the news and the opinions or the responses very, very closely. And that’s because we don’t want to get it wrong. However, I think there still a space for us to be a little bit less structured,” Marcos Jr. said.

"Let's start in the new year, we'll try to make things less structured and I’ll make myself more accessible to you," he noted.

Marcos Jr. also wants the public to be more engaged, noting that the government is open to both criticisms and support.

"Because there are so many times -- believe me it works both ways -- I read the newspaper, I watch the television, I look on social media and there are many times gusto kong sagutin kasi may sagot naman, may magandang sagot diyan pero hindi, kasi kailangan it has to be part of this, you know, we have to attend to other issues. But I think there is space, there is sufficient space," he said.

"Matalino ang Pilipino e, and sometimes we, I feel, 'yung mga Pinoy wise yan e, advanced tayo. And we shouldn't underestimate the understanding of an ordinary citizen. They understand more than we think," the president added.

The chief executive believes establishing credibility by being open and honest is the "only defense" against misinformation and fake news on social media, especially in the upcoming elections.

"They want to close the sources of information. Gusto nila ikulong. Sasabihin nila ito ang tama. Palitan natin 'yun," he said.

"The only way, at least for our part in the government, is to open it up more.... Mabilis ang takbo ng panahon eh. We cannot just stand by and let all of these bad apples take over the discussion, take over the narrative. We will be part of that narrative, a very strong voice of that narrative," Marcos Jr. noted.
