MANILA (UPDATED) — A total of 66 senatorial aspirants have made it to the Commission on Elections’ final list of senatorial candidates in the 2025 midterm elections.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the initial list of 66 candidates has been finalized after 117 other aspirants considered nuisance candidates were removed.

“Sixty-six po ang ating senatorial aspirants at ‘yan po ay ilalabas namin ‘yung ballot faces next week. Makikita niyo more or less 'yung mga picture ng balota ng bawat bayan. Makikita niyo doon kung sino ang mga senador, ‘yung 66,” he said in a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.

"Wala tayong nakuhang restraining order, wala pong inissue na [temporary restraining order] ang Supreme Court sa 117 na dineclare ng Comelec na nuisance so 66 lang po talaga," he also said.

Comelec earlier said that in considering one as nuisance candidate, the law department considered "presence or absence of even a modicum of inclination or propensity to serve the public or be of service to others" as well as indications of "ideology, political ideas, or platforms of government necessary of Senators given the unique nature of the Senate" when evaluating an aspirant's "seriousness".

The Comelec Law Department also considered membership in a political party or the lack thereof. — with Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
