MANILA - If history would serve as the basis, Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David's elevation to the Sacred College of Cardinals was indeed a surprise.

Ironically, David's status as a cardinal makes him a "prince of the Church" as cardinals are equal in rank to secular princes.

A CARDINAL FOR THE LOCAL CHURCH
As tradition dictates, David was assigned a titular church in Rome just like the other cardinals.

In 2019, David received the backing of Pope Francis after getting death threats amid his scathing criticism of former president Rodrigo Duterte's bloody war on drugs.
