Starting December 20, provincial buses will once again be allowed to ply EDSA temporarily to help transport passengers to the provinces during the holidays.

Based on MMDA data, more than 2,000 provincial bus units will benefit from the move. There are 45 provincial bus terminals on EDSA, 27 are stationed on northbound and 18 are southbound.

Speaking to TeleRadyo Serbisyo, MMDA special operations group head Gabriel Go said volume of vehicles on EDSA is expected to increase in the coming days ahead of Christmas.

“Days before Christmas, characteristic na ng ating mga kalasada na bumibigat talaga ‘yung daloy ng trapiko. Definitely, will be expecting more vehicles sa ating mga kalsada. There will be a slight increase of volume of vehicles sa ating mga kalsada in the next few days,” he said.

“It is because marami sa ating mga kababayan, we already started going to the malls. Yung ating mga mahal sa buhay na galing abroad who wishes to spend time in the Philippines, ‘yung mga galing probinsya.”

The MMDA earlier banned mallwide sales to lessen traffic in these areas.
