Members of transport group PISTON march toward and picket in front of Mendiola Bridge in Manila on July 17, 2023, calling on President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to junk the Omnibus Franchising Guidelines that would scrap use of old public utility vehicles around the country.  Jeepney drivers and operators are set to hold a 3-day transport strike in time with Marcos' second State of the Nation Address on July 24 to raise concern on the implementation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.

Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Members of transport group PISTON march toward and picket in front of Mendiola Bridge in Manila on July 17, 2023. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span>MANILA -- The Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) on Sunday claimed that some of their members who joined the consolidation saw their earnings dwindle allegedly after joining the jeepney modernization program.  </div><p>PISTON national president Mody Floranda said this is why a number of drivers and operators decided to go back to &quot;boundary system&quot; just to make ends meet.</p><p>&quot;Sa sinasabi ng ating mga miyembro, nakakapag uwi sila ng P500-P600 sa loob ng 12-18 hours ng pamamasada na lalo lumiit dahil alam natin may mga serye ng pagtaas ng presyong petrolyo,&quot; said Floranda in an interview on Teleradyo Serbisyo.</p><div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/10/27/10-000-more-operators-drivers-to-join-jeepney-consolidation-ltfrb-1938"><strong>10,000 more operators, drivers to join jeepney consolidation, says LTFRB</strong></a></div><p>&quot;Kami ay nag ikot sa bahagi ng Novaliches at may nakausap tayo na mga driver na nagkooperatiba na sa ngayon ay umaaray pagkat nawala ang kita... &#x27;yung mga kapatid natin na nagkooperatiba sa ngayon po ay bumalik sila sa boundary system... sabi nga nila hindi namin makita ang Pasko, meron ba kaming pagsasaluhan a Noche Buena? Kasi wala talagang kita,&quot; he added.</p><p>In relation to this, Floranda said they made an appeal to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to allow jeepney drivers who did not join the consolidation to have their passenger vehicles registered.</p><p>This is despite the November 29 deadline set by the agency after reopening the consolidation since the original cutoff on April 30.</p><p>&quot;Sa ngayon wala pang tugon uli ang LTFRB kaugnay sa paglock ng extension,&quot; said Floranda. &quot;Dapat sagutin nila ang kahilingan ng ating mga operator para makapagserbisyo sa ating mamamayan, lalot ngayong December na, Christmas na at nagluluwasan ang mga mga kababayan mula sa rehiyon papuntang Metro Manila.&quot;</p><p>But Usec. Jesus Ferdinand &quot;Andy&quot; Ortega, Road Transport and Infrastructure chief of the Department of Transportation (DoTR), said they are not inclined to heed their request.</p><p>&quot;Ang no. 1 condition ng programa is mag-consolidate, magsamama sa isang professional group para gumanda ang buhay (ng driver). Then eventually i-extend ang consolidation. Nung wala nang extension ng consolidation ang naging gusto nialng mangyari na payagan kami mag-register sa LTO even though hindi nagconsolidation,&quot; said Ortega.</p><p>He also refuted claims that around 8,000 drivers and operators withdrew out from the jeepney consolidation.</p><p>&quot;I think after April 30 nagkaroon ng ugong sa grupo ng dalawang grupo na magwidraw, so eventually nagkaroon ng numero.
