MANILA — The National Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday said it would give Vice President Sara Duterte courtesy and due process as it looked into her alleged assassination threat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The NBI asked Duterte to appear at its headquarters on Friday to explain her weekend press conference where she said she had instructed that Marcos, Speaker Martin Romualdez, and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos be killed should an alleged plot to kill her succeed.

“Ang next po, hintayin natin yung Friday kung a-appear ba si Vice President Sara. Dapat po mag-appear siya personally, marami kaming tanong sa kanya. But she can bring with her ang lawyer niya,” NBI Director Jaime Santiago told TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

Asked about the NBI’s next steps if Duterte would not show up, he said, “Meron naman kaming mga hawak nang ebidensya, proof like the video clip na napatunayan na naming authentic at napa-preserve na namin sa Facebook. From there, d’yan na lamang kami iikot.”

The Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Tuesday thatDuterte could face complaints for libel, defamation, and grave threatfor her remarks against the President.

“Pag-aaralan pa po namin mabuti ‘yan, lahat ng anggulo. Hindi po nag-aano pa sa isang kaso or whatever. Ayaw pa po naming i-discuss ‘yan,” Santiago said of potential cases against Duterte.

“Courtesy… due process, ibibigay namin lahat ito kay Pangalawang Pangulong Sara para makita yung fairness natin,” he added.

‘A FARCE’

Duterte on Tuesday said her statement was taken out of context. She said the "revenge" plot had a specific condition before it could be put into motion: that she had to die first.

She added that her remark "does not constitute to an active threat."

"Common sense should be enough for us to understand and accept that a supposed conditional act of revenge does not constitute to an active threat. This is plan without a flesh," the Vice President said.

"Tossing the word 'assassin' into this issue makes things even more terrifying - and especially because I never used that term during my recent consternation against the Marcos administration's failure to serve the Filipinos while it masterfully persecutes political enemies," she said.

"I am confident that an honest scrutiny would easily expose this narrative to be farce, imagined, or nothing at all."

Duterte claimed there was a "diametric contrast" between the executive branch's reaction to statements against Marcos Jr. and its supposed inaction when she raised concerns over threats to her security and personnel.

She said she has been expressing "in previous months threats to my person and continuing threats to the life of OVP personnel."
