Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/FileMANILA -- Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. called on soldiers to remain loyal to the Constitution, amid backlash against Vice President Sara Duterte for her remarks threatening to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. killed.

In his speech during the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women 2024 kick-off ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo, Brawner reminded AFP personnel to continue being professional and competent.

"In the past days, we have seen a myriad of events that transpired in our country and this has shaken the political environment of our country. As soldiers, we should not be shaken by this. Hindi dapat tayo maapektuhan nang masama dahil dito," Brawner told soldiers on Monday.

He added that soldiers should focus on their sworn vow to avoid confusion amid political conflicts.

"We just have to remind ourselves of the vow, yung panata na ginawa po natin nung tayo ay bagong pasok lamang sa serbisyo and up to now," the military chief said. "In that vow, sinabi po natin that we vow to defend the Constitution of the Philippines. That means that we have to follow the chain of command. Sinabi natin we are loyal to our country; we are loyal to our flag; we are loyal to our organization; and we are loyal to the Constitution."

"This also goes to say that we are loyal to the duly constituted authorities whoever that may be. Hindi po tayo loyal sa tao, kundi sa position, and in that vow that we took—yung panata natin, sinasabi natin na we will continue to uphold the Constitution, so yun lang isipin natin para hindi natin maconfuse, ano? Very clear yung ating mandate," Brawner added.

According to the Constitution, the elected and sitting president serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the AFP.

Duterte, in a virtual press conference held early Saturday night, lashed out at Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

This was after the House of Representatives ordered Duterte's chief of staff, Atty. Zuleika Lopez, to be transferred to the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City. Lopez had been detained over a contempt citation "for undue interference, in the House panel's proceedings looking into the confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education.

Malacanang described Duterte's claim that she has contracted an assassin to kill Marcos Jr. should a plot against her succeed as an "active threat."
