MANILA – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Tuesday said climate change remains one of the biggest threats to Philippine fisheries production.  In a public briefing, BFAR Spokesperson Nazario Briguera said this problem is worsened by the destruction of critical marine habitats, which is why it is important for the public to protect them. “Ang epekto nito ay mas lalong lalala kung sira ang ating marine habitat. Mas lumalala ito kaya kailangan natin tugunan ang climate change, wag natin sirain ang bakawanan – ang ating mangroves, ang ating mga seagrass, ang ating mga coral,” said the BFAR official. “Ito ang mga bagay para ma-mitigate natin ang climate change sa ating bansa (JC) ang pinakalamakas na depensa sa ating coastal areas ay ang natural barriers, yung mga mangroves natin, kapag may daluyong, storm surges. Aside sa tahanan sila ng mga isda, proteksyon din sila ng ating komunidad,” he added. Briguera said the government also puts a premium on aquaculture, noting that this sector accounts for 52 percent of fisheries output in the country.“Malaki ang potensyal ng aquaculture so dapat doon din ang concentration ng pamahalaan. (JC) Paano natin pamamahalaan ito? Patuloy natin pinalalakas ang tinatawag natin na legislated hatcheries sa mga komunidad,” he said. “Walang ibang pamamaraan para mapalawak natin ang produksyon, mapaunlad natin ang produksyon, mapanumbalik natin ang sigla ng karagatan… kailangan patuloy nating ipagpatuloy ang conservation measures: closed-fishing season, mga habitats, sanctuaries, marine reserves natin, kailangan isinusulong natin yan,” the spokesman added. Once the fish habitat is destroyed, he said, it would be more challenging to make fishery production sustainable.
