MANILA — The Philippines chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations next year will benefit small businesses too, and not just conglomerates, a leading figure in the private sector said.

Go Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion, who is set to lead the ASEAN-Business Advisory Council with the country’s hosting in 2026, said digitalization will take centerstage next year and would help micro, small and medium enterprises expand their businesses.

“What we want to do is make our MSMEs realized that the hosting of the ASEAN in 2026 is not only for those big businessmen, it is mainly going to be also focused on our micro, small and medium enterprises because the only solution to economic empowerment is enabling our MSME to learn more about digitalization and AI," Concepcion said in a television interview on Wednesday.

Concepcion also underscored how artificial intelligence can provide valuable mentorship to small entrepreneurs and how social media through content creation can empower MSMEs.

“What’s very important kasi dito is we have to enable our MSMEs to scale up and we have seen that social media is a great tool for them to be able to access mentors, to be able to access capital, to be able to access market at kailangan natin dito is to be able to teach on how to do that,” Concepcion noted.

He highlighted the significance of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s acknowledgment of the bloc’s potential to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence.

Concepcion co-chaired this years’ ASEAN-Business Advisory Council that launched the AI Engagement Platform which the president said “offers a timely and strategic approach to digital governance across the region”.

The former presidential adviser also believes intensifying cooperation among ASEAN member-states to foster digital agricultural technology can improve the level of food security in the country.

“Here in the Philippines, if we are alone we’ll just be—we won’t achieve scale, but if ten countries, or eleven now with Timor L’este, come together and really form a strong alliance towards, you know ASEAN and we call that ASEAN Food Security Alliance, we are forward looking at creating more jobs in agriculture for our farmers,” he emphasized.
