MANILA —  The Department of Energy said power supply remains sufficient amid the onset of the dry season, and that measures are in place to ensure that there will be no power interruptions during the May 2025 midterm elections.

Energy Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan said the DOE has already activated a task force that will oversee preparations of the agency ahead of the elections, along with the Commission on Elections and  private stakeholders.

Marasigan said that as early as now, the DOE has directed power plants to operate at full capacity and to refrain from conducting preventive maintenance and repairs at least one week before and after the polls.

“Ganundin po sa ating transmission and distribution system, naglabas na tayo ng ating kalatas na dapat sa ngayon palang, nag-iinspeksyon na sila ng kanilang linya ng kuryente para pagdating ng eleksyon tayo dapat ay handa kung anuman ang kailangan natin.”

(This also goes for our transmission and distribution system. We advised them that they should already be inspecting power lines so that we are prepared for the elections.)

The DOE has also prepared power generating facilities and emergency solar lamps for areas that will require redundancy in their power supply.

Marasigan also said the country has enough power supply during the summer season, where consumer demand for electricity is usually high.

Contingency and mitigating measures are in place to prevent power interruptions should the country’s power grid be placed on yellow or red alert, he added.

Among the measures put in place is the interruptible load program where commercial and industrial facilities will voluntarily use their own backup power generation equipment when the power grid goes on red alert.
