MANILA — Fish and vegetable prices rose at Kamuning Market, while pork prices dropped amid lower demand as many Filipinos abstain from meat during Holy Week.

Pork vendor Fely Basco said she was keeping her pork stock low to prevent financial losses.

“Kasi yung mga tao nag-uwian na sa probinsya at syempre pag Holy Week bihira lang kumakain na ng baboy. Sarado yung mga karinderya, mga nagtitinda... Dapat i-kontrol namin yung paninda namin, sapat lang ang ititinda namin,” said Basco.

From P380 per kilo last week, pork cuts such as lean meat and porkchop now sell for P350.

Prices for pata, buto-buto, and kasim remained stable at P350 to P380 per kilo while liempo rose from P450 to P470 per kilo.

Galunggong, a common alternative to pork during Holy Week, increased to P240 per kilo from P200, while shrimp now costs P500 per kilo, up by P50 from the previous week. Bangus prices range from P150 to P240 per kilo, depending on size.

Vegetable prices also surged. Cabbage jumped from P80 to P130 per kilo. String beans increased from P30 to P50, while broccoli rose from P150 to P200 per kilo.

Sayote, previously P300, now sells at P550 per kilo. Pechay Tagalog also increased from P60 to P100. Eggplants and carrots, however, remain at P60 to P80 per kilo.

The price hikes forced customers like George Serrano to trim their shopping lists.

“Syempre paunti-unti na lang (ang pagbili). Yung kasya lang sa budget… Halimbawa, bibili ako ng kalahating kilo, edi one-fourth na lang para sakto sa budget ko,” he said.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) earlier said there was sufficient fish supply during the Holy Week and there was no reason for unjustified price hikes.

However, some vendors reported that on certain days during the week, fish supply was lower than expected.

The DA said it was monitoring fish prices and added that Holy Week price hikes were temporary.
