MANILA -- The operator of the LRT-1 on Tuesday asserted that the fare hike it asked for is necessary, after groups asked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to stop the fare increase.

In a statement, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) said the adjustment is needed to continue improving the commuter experience and keep train operations safe, reliable, and sustainable.

"LRMC's substantial investments have modernized the LRT-1, culminating in the recent completion of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1," the company said.

"Since assuming operations in 2015, LRMC has driven significant improvements to the LRT-1 system, investing in crucial upgrades that have led to enhanced operational efficiency and reliability," it added.

The LRMC said it wants to continue efficient services to Filipino commuters.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr), meanwhile, said the fare hike is "long overdue," as it stressed that it respects the decision of those who asked to stop the fare hike.

"This rate increase is needed to not only ensure smooth and timely maintenance of LRT-1 but also the extension of the line all the way to Cavite under the present PPP contract," DOTr said.

"This rate increase, which was approved last January 30, 2025, is only the second rate increase with 2023 being the first. This was also much lower than the proposed 20 peso fare originally submitted by the (LRMC)," it said.
