MANILA — An official of the Department of Agriculture has been elected as chairperson of a United Nations body that provides a forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture.

DA Assistant Secretary for Policy and Regulations Paz Benavidez II, also a lawyer, was chosen as chairwoman of the UN's Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

Benavidez's election, held during the 20th session in Rome, "is historic as she becomes the first Filipino to hold this prestigious position," the DA said.

The commission is the only permanent intergovernmental body of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization dedicated to biological diversity for food and agriculture, the agency noted.

It added that the UN commission — created in 1983 to address plant genetic resources — focuses on policies for the sustainable use, conservation, and equitable sharing of these essential resources.

Benavidez will serve a two-year term as chairwoman, concluding in 2027 at the 21st session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said Benavidez's election was a "very proud moment," adding the development "speaks volumes not only about her personal achievements but also the wealth of talent within the DA."
