MANILA -- NLEX Corp. said it is investing almost P1.4 billion to improve the technology along tollways and make travel smoother for passengers.

In a statement, the toll operator said it will install automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras on 315 toll lanes. These will capture license plate data from vehicles at barrierless plazas and track vehicles passing without RFID tags or with insufficient balance.

Currently, 77 lanes have ALPR cameras.

NLEX Corp. also said it will convert the remaining 127 RFID antennas to high-frequency antennas capable of reading RFID stickers more efficiently.

"These antennas will increase the read range for RFID stickers and detect up to three vehicles in advance to promptly process toll lane transactions," the company explained.

NLEX Corp. said it hopes to achieve 98 percent RFID readability rate and ensure vehicle detection at toll lanes within one second for all classes.

"By benchmarking its technologies against those used in other countries, we aim to provide greater accessibility and convenience to all motorists at NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector,” said NLEX Corporation chief finance officer Maria Theresa Wells.

NLEX also said it has invested in additional speed cameras to help curb the dangers of speeding for the safety of motorists.
