MANILA -- The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said Tuesday it eyed lowering the surge rates of ride-hailing services by as much as 50 percent.

Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) firms have explained that the surge fee is computed based on the traffic situation, the number of available drivers, and the demand, among others, noted LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III.

"Yung formula nila, yun ang kinukweston ko po. And then baka pwedeng gawin na lang uniform, i-reduce ang surge fee to as much as 50 percent," he told TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

The LTFRB recently added 5,000 slots for ride-hailing services in Metro Manila to accommodate the expected increase in demand this holiday season.

Guadiz said he hoped this would help cut down surge rates during rush hour.
