<p>MANILA -- The selling and use of fake PWD (persons with disability ) IDs is tax evasion, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said Thursday.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/11/14/restaurant-owners-sound-alarm-over-fake-pwd-cards-1912" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Restaurant owners sound alarm over fake PWD cards</a></div><p>&quot;People who sell and use fake PWD IDs are not only committing tax evasion, they are also disrespecting legitimate and compliant PWDs,&quot; said BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr.</p><p>Under Republic Act No. 7277, as amended by Republic Act No. 10754, PWDs get a 20 percent discount and an exemption from value-added tax (VAT) on certain goods and services by presenting a PWD card. </p><p>However, the BIR said unscrupulous persons have been selling fake PWD IDs online and on the street, making these accessible to those who want to fraudulently claim these benefits.</p><p>&quot;The discount given by law to PWDs is for the improvement of their well-being and easing of their financial burden. Ibig sabihin niyan nawawalan ng kita rin ang mga negosyante imbes na nagagamit &#x27;yan sa mga proyekto ng ating gobyerno at ang talagang nakikinabang ay &#x27;yung PWDs ay itong mga manloloko ang nakikinabang,&quot; Lumagui noted.</p><p>&quot;Dahil kasong kriminal ang pwedeng ikaso dito so may fines at may parusang pagkakakulong din &#x27;yan pagka napatunayan na involved kayo dito sa pagbebenta ng pekeng PWD IDs at &#x27;yung paggamit mismo,&quot; he emphasized.</p><p>The BIR said it will continue to conduct tax audits on transactions involving PWDs reported by establishments. </p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zXgTyrfXdcc?&amp;ab_channel=ABS-CBNNewsautoplay=1&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><p>If the agency finds out that the PWD ID numbers sent in by businesses, it will not grant the deductions claimed by the establishments. Additionally, VAT-exempt sales linked to fake IDs will be assessed with deficiency VAT, including penalties and interest.</p><p>The BIR also said it will work more closely with the Department of Health and the National Council on Disability Affairs, to verify the legitimacy of PWD IDs.</p><p> --with reports from Harlene Delgado, ABS-CBN News</p>
