MANILA — E-wallet platform GCash on Wednesday urged consumers to be wary of "spoofing scam" after some users reportedly received phishing links through its official SMS alert number.

Several users tagged the e-wallet operator on X, the former Twitter, asking GCash for an explanation on why they have been receiving scam messages.

Telcos and the National Telecommunications Commission earlier banned the use of links in SMS to curb phishing scams.

In an X response, Gcash said, "Ingat sa spoofing scam! 'Wag magtiwala agad sa mga SMS na nagpapanggap na mula sa GCash at maging alerto laban sa scammers na gumagamit ng ilegal na software para magmukhang legit ang sender."

In a separate social media post, GCash said the scammers were using "IMSI Catcher" to send SMS scam messages while mimicking credible brands.

GCash reiterated that it would not send links via email or SMS. To keep accounts secure, the platform reminded the public not to click links and not to share or disclose OTP and MPINs.

Users can report suspected spoofing scam or other fraudulent activities through the GCash Help Center or the "Chat with Gigi" inside the GCash app.
