MANILA -- Filipino tycoon Manny Villar is one of Forbes Asia's "Heroes of Philanthropy" for 2024.

The list honors philanthropists who have made contributions and shown commitment to causes they cherish over the past year.

Forbes noted that Villar donated P615 million, or $10.4 million, to build a church and school inside Provence, a residential community being developed by his company, Vista Land & Lifescapes.

The donation includes a 1.2 hectares of land given to the local Catholic Church, on which will rise a 500-square-meter space seating 320 people. Plans for the school, meanwhile, are still being finalized, Forbes said.

“It has always been my belief that communities flourish when faith and education are at [their] center,” Villar told the publication.

Forbes also noted that the real estate and retail magnate donated more than 2 hectares of land to the Saint Jude Catholic School in Manila and completed the donation of 5 hectares to the University of the Philippines in 2019.

Forbes said these have a combined value of P8 billion. Aside from Villar, the Filipino-Australian founder of Canva--Melanie Perkins--was also lauded for her contributions to fighting extreme poverty.

Forbes noted that Perkins and her husband Cliff Obrecht's Canva Foundation donated A$23 million to GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that helps people living in extreme poverty through unconditional cash transfers in countries like Kenya, Malawi and Uganda.

The donation can reach more than 64,000 people, Forbes said. The website also noted that Perkins and Obrecht 's foundation has donated A$7.4 million to a pilot program to help 400,000 students in southern Africa and India get a better education and break the poverty cycle.

Other Filipinos who made the list in past years include San Miguel Corporation president Ramon Ang in 2023, and actress Angel Locsin in 2019.
