Energy Undersecretary Rowena Guevara explained current power rates from solar energy remain low at P3.50 - P4.50 kilowatt/hour (kWh). She added that the country's use of renewable energy will cushion it from the effects of volatile global oil prices.

"'Pag nagkaroon tayo ng indigenous renewable energy, mababawasan ang epekto sa atin ng pagtaas at pagbaba ng presyo ng fossil fuel," Guevara noted.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the groundbreaking of the P200-billion Meralco Terra Solar (MTerra) Project touted to be the largest integrated solar and battery storage facility in the world. The facility will have a capacity of 3,500 megawatts (MW) that can generate electricity for 2.5 million households or over 10 million Filipinos.

Guevara said the project will greatly contribute to attaining the country's target of 35 percent renewable energy in the power generation mix by 2030 and up to 50 percent by 2040. Currently, renewable energy makes up 22 percent of the country's generation mix.

Aside from solar power, the energy department is also venturing into other clean energy technologies including nuclear energy. Guevara said they target to generate 1,200 MW from nuclear energy by the year 2032; 2,400 MW by 2035; and 4,500 MW by 2050.

The agency vows to continue working with the private sector and other renewable energy developers to build more facilities. As of October 2024, Guevara said renewable energy facilities generating 5,784 MW have been installed, while 1,282 renewable energy service contracts providing 130,269.9 MW have been awarded.
