MANILA – Enteng intensified into a severe tropical storm on Tuesday afternoon, PAGASA said.
Enteng was packing winds of 95 kilometers per hour and up to 115 kph gusts. It was located 165 kilometers west northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte at 3 p.m., the state weather bureau said.
PAGASA said Enteng would dump 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 inches) of rains over Ilocos Region and Abra until Wednesday afternoon.
“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards…and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” PAGASA warned.
It added that the habagat or southwest monsoon enhanced by Enteng would bring moderate to intense rainfall in other areas of Luzon, especially along the western portions, over the next 3 days.
PAGASA kept signal 1 raised over the following areas where 39 to 61 kph winds are expected.
Ilocos Norte
Ilocos Sur
Northern portion of La Union (Luna, Santol, San Juan, Bagulin, Bangar, San Gabriel, Bacnotan, Sudipen, Balaoan, City of San Fernando)
Abra
Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains reportedly killed 12 people, officials said.
As a precaution, schools and government offices across Metro Manila and other areas were shut for the day, while dozens of flights were canceled due to the weather.

The storm also unleashed strong currents and big waves that wrought chaos in Manila Bay on Monday, hurling a barge and an oil tanker onto the seawall and causing another barge to run adrift, the coast guard said.
A tug and a small passenger ship also collided while both were anchored, causing a fire aboard the second vessel, it said in a statement.
All 18 crew members of MV Kamilla, the vessel that caught fire, were rescued and accounted for, the coast guard added.
