MANILA — Severe tropical storm Enteng (International name: Yagi) maintained its strength as it moves over the West Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau said late Tuesday.

In its 11 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Enteng was last located 210 kilometers west northwest of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts of up to 115 kph.

It is moving west northwestward at 10 kph, and is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility early Wednesday.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over the following areas:

  • • Ilocos Norte
  • • Ilocos Sur
  • • Northern portion of La Union (Luna, Santol, San Juan, Bagulin, Bangar, San Gabriel, Bacnotan, Sudipen, Balaoan, City of San Fernando)
  • • Abra

PAGASA also said heavy rainfall between 50 to 100 millimeters may be expected over Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

“Forecast rainfall are generally higher in elevated or mountainous areas. Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in official hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” it added.

Enteng is also enhancing the southwest monsoon or habagat, which will bring moderate to intense rainfall in other parts of Luzon within the next three days.

Outside PAR, Enteng will move generally westward until Thursday, before turning west northwestward. It is also expected to make another landfall in the vicinity of southern mainland China over the weekend.

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed 12 people, officials said.

As a precaution, classes in several areas in Luzon remain suspended until Wednesday, while dozens of flights were canceled Tuesday due to the weather.
