The cycling advocacy group Firefly Brigade highlights cities that implement car-free roads during their monthly critical mass rides, held every third Sunday, which coincidentally falls on World Car-Free Day this year.

The non-profit group has been organizing critical mass rides since 1999, promoting bicycles as a means for clean air and sustainable communities.

The ride began along Emerald Avenue in Pasig City, then rode past Mayflower Street in Mandaluyong City. After traversing EDSA, the group took a turn towards Ayala Avenue in Makati City. After taking Buendia Avenue, they concluded their ride along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.

Pasig City revived its car-free Sundays in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, calling the initiative 'People's Streets.' Since then, it has expanded to other streets across the city.
A section of Mayflower Street in Mandaluyong was designated car-free on Sundays toward the end of 2023.

In a move to encourage walking and cycling, the local government of Makati implemented car-free Sundays along Ayala Avenue in September 2023 and has since extended the initiative to include sections of Paseo De Roxas and Makati Avenue.

Manila followed suit by passing City Ordinance No. 9047, which implemented 'Move Manila—Car-Free Sundays' along Roxas Boulevard.

World Car-Free Day encourages individuals and cities to shift from a car-centric culture to one that prioritizes a kinder and safer transportation system, where pedestrians, commuters, and cyclists are given priority.
