Heavy rains flooded streets in parts of the Philippines as tropical storm Yagi, locally named "Enteng", hit the country on Monday (September 2), prompting the suspension of government work and classes.

Yagi brought winds of up to 85 kph (53 mph), with gusts reaching 105 kph (65 mph), as it continued to move northwestward in the northern island of Luzon, the local weather agency said in a bulletin.

Residents in Rizal province said the floodwater "reached the rooftops" of some houses on Monday morning while others were trapped as a nearby river overflowed.

The Philippines is frequently hit by storms, with an average of 20 tropical cyclones affecting the country annually.
