MANILA — The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Open University System (PUP OUS) for the first time launched its face-to-face classes for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in Manila City Jail - Male Dormitory on Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, PUP OUS said 72 PDLs enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Marketing Management program.

The program equips PDLs with "valuable knowledge and skills, instills hope, and empowers them to envision a brighter future beyond their current circumstances," PUP OUS said.

"The event marked a significant milestone in the university's commitment to providing quality education to marginalized sectors of society," it said.

PUP OUS said the university plans to continue conducting classes for PDLs to ensure they receive the same academic support as students enrolled in regular schools.

"This initiative is expected to profoundly impact these students' lives, enabling them to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society upon their release," PUP OUS said.

Last July, the Manila City Jail - Male Dormitory and PUP OUS signed an agreement to offer tertiary education to PDLs.

The initiative aims to provide quality education as part of the PDLs' rehabilitation program, helping them pursue their educational goals despite being incarcerated, the Manila City Jail said then.
