MANILA (UPDATE) — Tropical depression Gener and tropical storm Pulasan are supercharging the southwest monsoon or habagat, which is forecast to bring moderate to intense rainfall over many areas across the Philippines until Friday, the country's weather service said.

According to PAGASA's advisory issued Tuesday afternoon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Cebu, Zamboanga del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur may experience heavy rains from Tuesday until Friday due to the habagat.

Meanwhile, residents in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Region, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Quezon, Rizal, Aurora, Zambales, and Bataan are advised to prepare for heavy rains until Thursday due to tropical depression Gener.

WIND SIGNAL NO. 1 STILL UP, ROUGH SEAS PERSIST

Gener slightly intensified Tuesday afternoon and is now over the West Philippine Sea.

It is now packing 55-kilometer-per-hour winds, prompting PAGASA to place Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and the western portion of Pangasinan under wind signal no. 1.

The southwest monsoon is also predicted to cause rough seas over the country's coastal waters, PAGASA said. Mariners and fishermen are urged to take precautions, with the weather agency reminding them not to venture out to sea under severe sea conditions.

Gener is forecast to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, during which it could intensify into a tropical storm.

Outside the Philippine area, PAGASA said the cyclone could continue with its westward movement over the West Philippine Sea for the remainder of its forecast period.

The southwest monsoon and the two cyclones have spawned flooding over the vast swaths of the country this week, including parts of Metro Manila, Mindoro, and Antique.

The rains from the weather disturbances have also prompted multiple class cancellations in the affected regions.
