MANILA -- The August Twenty-One Movement (ATOM), “which was at the forefront of the fight against dictatorship and its machinations in the ’80s”, staged its monthly “ROAR” or “Run/Ride On Against Revision of History” in Makati City, Sunday morning. 

Apart from protecting the people's legacy of Ninoy Aquino and EDSA People Power Revolution I, ATOM's ROAR! “also can mean Running Against Revision of the 1987 Constitution.” 

“The ROAR is our little initiative to let the people to be wary of that there is a thing as historical revisionism or historical distortion,” ATOM President Volt Bohol told ABS-CBN News. 

Remembering EDSA People Power

“Kailangan magmulat na tayo ng mata natin and not be forgetful of history and we ought to learn from what has happened para hindi na maulit. Regretfully, sabi nila, history repeats itself,” Rosemarie Abundo, a member of ATOM, added. 

Furthermore, ATOM emphasized that they are “committed to voicing out and spending our energies to continue speaking up against these attacks against our true history.” 

The first ROAR in 1983, which was a twice-a-month activity, was originally participated by 17-21 ATOM members. 

Eventually, they became a weekly affair, since more people started joining the jogging activity at Roxas Boulevard.

“Ito ay paggunita sa isang kasaysayan ng bayan natin. Isang bahagi ng kwento ng Pilipino na kailangan may natutuhan tayo para hindi na natin balikan. Ito nga ‘yong pagkakaroon ng isang sentral na figure sa ating pamahalaan na siyang humawak ng lahat ng kapangyarihan— executive, judiciary, at legislation,” said Filipino public historian Xiao Chua, who also graced the event. 

Kiko Aquino Dee, one of Ninoy’s grandchildren and the Deputy Executive Director of Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation, also participated in the event. 

“Kaming mga kamag-anak nila, wala naman kaming entitlement sa kung ano mang praise na nakukuha nila. Kaya ‘yong fact na may nag-e-effort pa rin na mga ganito, kahit na medyo magulo ang sitwasyon ngayon, para sa akin hangga’t kaya ko, dapat andun ako kasama nila,” he said.
