MANILA — Both the emergency room (ER) and gymnasium that serves as a makeshift leptospirosis ward of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) have reached full capacity on Friday, hospital officials said.

This comes just several days after activation of the ward and exactly two weeks of widespread flooding caused by monsoon rains in Metro Manila.

Of the 125 patients currently at the ER, only 66 are in beds. The rest are being given medical attention while on wheelchairs or mono block stools.

The NKTI said it has no problems with adding more beds but stressed the need for additional manpower to be able to attend to the patient’s needs more effectively.

The Department of Health (DOH) assured the NKTI that it is cognizant of their needs and will respond in the most appropriate manner. It also advised the public as well as other facilities to avoid bringing patients to the NKTI.

“Ina-advise natin ang lahat: ‘wag dalhin lahat sa NKTI because baka naman hindi kailangan ilipat ng mga tao sa NKTI – meaning ang mga doctors, nurses – kung ‘yung pasyente ang pwedeng ilipat dala-dala ng ambulansiya,” said DOH Spokesperson Albert Domingo.
