MANILA (UPDATED) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday congratulated Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo for bagging the Philippines’ first gold medal in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Yulo was hailed as the first Filipino male gold medalist for his performance in the floor exercise in men's artistic gymnastics.

“Congratulations, Caloy! The entire country stands proud with you!” Marcos Jr. said in a social media post.

“I am confident that it will not be the last,” he said.

In a separate post, First Lady Liza Marcos also congratulated Yulo for giving the Philippines’ first gold finish in this year’s global tournament.

“Congratulations, Carlos Yulo!” she said.

“Got goosebumps as Lupang Hinirang played at the arena!,” she said.

“We are so proud of you!” she said.

Under the Philippines’ Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act,” gold medalists in international sports competitions shall receive

P10 million from the government, silver medalists are entitled to P5 million, while bronze medalists will get P2 million.

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan, in a statement, said the City of Manila is preparing a hero's welcome for Yulo, who is from Leveriza, Malate.

"The grandest welcome will greet him and all our Paris Olympians," Lacuna-Pangan said. " When we meet him, we will present Carlos Yulo cash incentives,  awards, and symbols of the eternal gratitude of the proud Capital City of the Philippines."
