WEST PHILIPPINE SEA — Two Chinese warships shadowed Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessels while en route to Pag-asa Island last Sunday.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessel first appeared past 6 p.m. on Sunday, just 6 hours after BFAR vessels BRP Datu Romapenet and BRP Datu Sanday left Port of Capinpin in Bataan.

ABS-CBN News is onboard BRP Romapenet.

The PLAN vessel with bow number 569 shadowed the two Philippine ships until Monday afternoon, and was as close as neary 100 meters.

Speaking to reporters in Pag-asa Island, Commodore Jay Tarriela, Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, said this is not the first time that Chinese warships shadowed BFAR vessels.

“This is not the first time na ginagawa ng PLA Navy yan. Lagi naman ginagawa ng PLA Navy yan. Umaaligid, nagsha-shadow, but they are not doing dangerous maneuver,” said Tarriela during a press conference held in Pag-asa Island this Thursday.

“Ang gumagawa lang ng dangerous maneuver sa West Philippine Sea to the point of — resulting in collision and even intentional ramming is Chinese Coast Guard at times even with the participation of Chinese maritime militia,” he said.

On Tuesday, AFP Spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said a total of 129 ships were monitored in the West Philippine Sea features from August 13 to 19.

Broken down, the military spokesperson said, there have been 18 coast guard, 13 navy, and 98 maritime militia ships spotted in Philippine waters.

The number is an increase from the 92 ships recorded from August 6 to 12.
