MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday ordered continuous surveillance of mpox in the Philippines after health authorities reported the country's first case of the disease for the year.

In a statement from the Presidential Communications Office, Marcos directed agencies to continue their surveillance of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, "especially on areas and people most vulnerable to the disease," such as the immunocompromised.

Marcos met with Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa and other officials on Tuesday after the country detected its fresh mpox patient, who had no travel history outside the country, which could indicate local transmission.

Herbosa assured Marcos that the health agency was ready to treat and manage mpox cases, the statement said.

The Quezon City local government announced Wednesday that the new mpox case went to two establishments in the city. It said authorities were tracing the 33-year-old Filipino patient's close contacts.

He went to a dermatology clinic and a massage spa along E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

The local government added that the 41 close contacts of the mpox patient were quarantined.

The World Health Organization last week declared the mpox surge a public health emergency of international concern, its highest alert level.

In an interview on ANC, Herbosa said there was no mpox outbreak in the Philippines.

Since 2022, the Philippines has detected 10 mpox cases, with the 33-year-old patient being the most recent. The 9 previous cases have recovered, while the new case is in a government hospital. No mpox deaths have been reported so far in the country.

Mpox is transmitted through intimate or skin-to-skin physical contact with someone infected or with contaminated materials.

Common mpox symptoms are skin lesions, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.
