Angara made the call during the launching of “Brigada Pagbasa Partners Network”, an event that gathered private partner organizations such sa World Vision Philippines, Philippine Business for Education, Philippine Business for Social Progress, Angat Buhay, among others.

“My immediate goal is to raise the PISA results which is in March. So tulungan niyo po sana kami doon dahil iyong Grades 7, 8 and 9 and 10 mga walong milyon lang naman iyan na kailangan natin tulungan,” he said during his speech.

The 2022 PISA results showed that Filipino students, aged 15 years old, lagged in math, science, reading and creative thinking when compared to students from other countries.

The international assessment also revealed that hunger and malnutrition affected the performance of students, noting that “12 percent of 15-year-old learners in the Philippines were reported coming to school without eating every day or every other day.”

Angara said he was waiting for the approval of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on his recommendation to form a task force that will focus on improving the country’s ranking in PISA.
