MANILA — At least 28 military personnel stationed at BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal) returned to solid ground on Monday following the successful Rotation and Resupply (RoRe) mission over the weekend.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. personally welcomed and awarded the returning soldiers at Naval Detachment Oyster Bay Pier in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

“The AFP extends its heartfelt gratitude to these valiant men and women for their unwavering service and sacrifices. Their dedication ensures the integrity of our territory, sovereignty, and sovereign rights, reflecting the true spirit of patriotism,” Brawner said.

Brawner also thanked the families of the returning personnel for their patience, support, and understanding during their deployment.

“The strength and resilience of these families are crucial to the morale and effectiveness of our troops,” he said.

The servicemen ended their deployment at the country’s naval garrison following the conduct of RoRe on July 27, the first time after the Philippines and China reached a “provisional arrangement.”

BRP Sierra Madre has been a focus of clashes between Chinese and Philippine ships in recent months as Beijing steps up efforts to push its claims to almost the entire South China Sea.

A Filipino sailor lost a thumb in the latest June 17 confrontation when Chinese coast guard members wielding knives, sticks and an axe foiled a Philippine Navy attempt to resupply its troops.
