MANILA — Parañaque National High School's main campus is eyeing holding single-shift classes in about three years, its principal said Monday as the new school year opened.

The school's principal, Gerry Lumaban, expressed the target as he shared that the construction of a new 12-story building at the school is set to begin next year.

The school is one of the biggest public schools in the Philippines and implements classes in two shifts to accommodate thousands of students.

For this school year, the school has more than 16,000 students, including learners with special education needs.

Because of the school's large population, police and barangay visibility have always been observed. Students are also asked to use their RFID-equipped IDs as part of attendance monitoring.

Department of Education regional director Jocelyn Andaya said other long-term plans include building more disaster-resilient structures and implementing distance learning as needed.

NEW CURRICULUM

This school year is also significant for Grade 7 teachers with the full implementation of their new curriculum, in which all eight core subjects are being taught every day, instead of just once or twice a week.

All eight core subjects include Math, English (Reading), Science, Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH, Values Education, and Filipino.

Lumaban said all teachers at the school are now focused on teaching alone and extra administrative duties have been delegated to the non-teaching personnel.

He said the school has 588 teachers and 150 non-teaching personnel.

"Ang Parañaque National High School Main ay lubos na naniniwala na ang pag-aalis ng administrative tasks sa mga teachers ay magdudulot ng mas mataas na antas ng pagtuturo, at kalaunan magkakaroon ng higher... learning outcomes," he said.

Students at the school receive a monthly allowance of P500, while teachers get P4,000 monthly from the Parañaque local government.

The local government also provided learning gadgets to students and teachers.

In the meantime, the school has put up gender-neutral restrooms and an "emotional baggage counter" where students and teachers alike can "leave" their "emotional baggage" by writing about their feelings or speaking with a guidance counselor.

840 SCHOOLS FAILED TO JOIN CLASS OPENING

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said around 840 schools from several regions postponed their classes on Monday due to the impact of typhoon Carina and the enhanced habagat.

These schools may conduct make-up classes on Saturdays for the missed lessons.

Nearly 20 million students have enrolled in schools nationwide, but the DepEd expects the number to reach 27.7 million with enrollment activities extended until September 16.
