MANILA — The Philippine National Police on Monday said it is deploying more than 33,000 personnel to secure the first day of classes in various schools across the country.

Over 19.8 million students were officially enrolled in basic education in public schools as of Monday morning, according to Department of Education data.

The PNP in a statement said police assistance desks would be put up at schools, adding that foot and mobile patrols would also be conducted around schools' premises to prevent criminal activities and ensure swift responses to incidents.

"The safety of our children as they return to school is our utmost priority," Police Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, PNP chief, said in the release.

As of Sunday night, the DepEd said 842 public schools across five regions affected by the recent monsoon and typhoon rains postponed their class opening.
