Singapore Red Cross on Friday said it is pledging $50,000 or around P2.9 million to support the Philippine Red Cross in its relief and assistance operations to communities affected by the southwest monsoon and typhoon Carina.

“The intensified rainfall, floods and landslides caused by the tropical cyclone have a devastating impact on families and communities. We are closely monitoring the situation and are in close communication with the Philippine Red Cross to ensure that our contribution provides the best support to the affected communities,” Benjamin William, Secretary General/CEO of the Singapore Red Cross, said in a statement.

The PRC has deployed its Emergency Response Unit (ERU) for search and rescue missions in flooded areas. It has also mobilized essential vehicles and assets to assist residents.

The habagat enhanced by typhoon Carina left at least 21 people dead, the Philippine National Police earlier said.

Carina this week intensified the habagat or southwest monsoon, which brought relentless rains that triggered floods and landslides in parts of Luzon.

Rescuers were deployed across Metro Manila to help evacuate people from low-lying homes after downpours turned streets into rivers, trapping vehicles.

A state of calamity was declared for the region, unlocking funds for relief efforts.
