MANILA - Super typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) has weakened into a typhoon as it loops near Taiwan, the state weather bureau said late Wednesday.

In its 11 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Carina was located 335 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes as of 10 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts of up to 215 kph.

It is moving southwestward at 15 kph and is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility Thursday morning.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 is still hoisted over Batanes, where gale-force winds 62 to 88 kph are expected within 24 hours.

Signal No. 1, where strong winds 39 to 61 kph are expected within 36 hours, is raised over the following areas:

  • *Babuyan Islands
  • *Northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Claveria, Santa Praxedes, Sanchez-Mira, Pamplona, Abulug, Ballesteros, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Santa Ana, Gonzaga)
  • *Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Burgos, Bangui, Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Adams)
  • PAGASA also warned of strong to typhoon-force winds extending outwards up to 700 km from the center due to Carina.

Although the typhoon is now less likely to directly bring heavy rainfall over any portion of the country, PAGASA said it is enhancing the southwest monsoon or habagat, which will bring moderate to intense rainfall over the western portion of Luzon until Saturday.

Carina is forecast to make landfall in Taiwan between Wednesday night to early Thursday morning before exiting PAR.

Outside PAR, Carina will cross the Taiwan Strait before making its final landfall over southeastern China between Thursday afternoon or evening.

The typhoon-enhanced habagat has caused almost non-stop rains over Metro Manila and nearby provinces, prompting class and work suspensions and forced evacuations in various areas due to flooding.
