MANILA -- A mother and her baby in a basin attached to a supplemental oxygen device were evacuated by rescuers from Bgy. Tumana in Marikina on Wednesday as floodwaters inundated the village.

Heavy rains brought about by the southwest monsoon and enhanced by Typhoon Carina continued to pour the whole day, flooding many parts of Metro Manila.

In Marikina, the local government had to conduct force evacuations of residents in low-lying villages after the water level of Marikina River reached the third and highest alarm at 18 meters as of 10 a.m.

The mayor said floodwaters and debris from upstream areas are raising the water level of the Marikina River.

Recorded rainfall has also reached 185 mm, which is triple that of the daily average of 50-600mm of rain, he said.

Some residents have already conducted preemptive evacuation and have taken shelter at Concepcion Integrated School and Nangka Elementary School after the water level reached 16 meters.

The mother and child were loaded directly to a waiting ambulance from the boat that ferried them from their flooded house.
