Typhoon Carina heads northwest; more areas under Signal No. 1

Typhoon Carina is lurching northwestward over the Philippine Sea, bringing strong winds to a larger portion of northern Luzon, state weather bureau PAGASA said late Monday.

According to PAGASA, the center of Carina was last seen 375 kilometers east northeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan at 10 p.m.

It has maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph, while moving northwestward at 15 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal  No. 1 was hoisted over Batanes, Babuyan Isalnds, the northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gattaran, Baggao, Peñablanca, Lal-Lo, Gonzaga, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Ballesteros, Allacapan, Abulug, Pamplona, Claveria, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Praxedes, Lasam, Alcala), the eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon, Dinapigue, Tumauini, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Cabagan, San Pablo, Santa Maria), the northern portion of Apayao  (Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Santa Marcela), the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Adams, Dumalneg, Burgos, Vintar),  the northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran), Polillo Islands, Calaguas Islands, and the northern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Caramoran).

The said areas will experience wind speeds of 39 kph to 61 kph that could threaten life and property.

PAGASA said Carina will also enhance the southwest monsoon, resulting in gale-force gusts late Monday and Tuesday over Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Zambales, Bataan, Aurora, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Davao Region.

PAGASA expects the typhoon to move generally north-northwestward or northward from tonight until tomorrow while gradually accelerating before turning northwestward.

The weather bureau said the typhoon will remain far from the Philippine landmass.
