MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday that he is pushing for educational reforms though digital technology.

"As we learn to address the classroom gap, the digital gap must also be addressed with equal intensity," said the President in his third SONA at the Batasang Pambansa.

"We are working towards the day when all students will be equipped with computers, smart TVs, essential programs, digital books and — once again — access to reliable power and the internet."

"Digitalization and solar powered electricity must now become a standard in our classrooms. simply put this is educational reform through technology," he said.

Marcos Jr. acknowledged that Filipino students have been lagging on several fronts compared to their foreign counterparts.

Data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) earlier showed that the scores garnered by the Philippines in math, reading and science were all below the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) global averages.

"Therefore, our national learning recovery program must proceed without the slightest distraction especially in basic education," he said.

"Our system of education must be strategically calibrated to make sure that our youth are not only taught to become literate but it has also consciously develop them to be problem solvers and into critical thinkers, hungry for success, ready for the future."

ACT: Concrete plans for education needed

Earlier, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers said the public is eager to hear from the President's SONA concrete plans to improve the lives of teachers and students.

ACT cited that the education sector continues to struggle with longstanding issues of shortages in classrooms, teachers, education support personnel, learning materials, and facilities.

There is also the issue of the proposed teachers' salary hike.

Prior to Marcos Jr.'s SONA, newly appointed Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the President gave marching orders to ensure the welfare of teachers and improving the quality of education.

Angara said the President wants concrete action especially after the 2022 results of Programme for International Student Assessment showed that Filipino students lagged in math, science, reading and creative thinking compared to students from other countries.
