Tropical cyclone Carina intensified into a typhoon while brewing over the Philippine Sea on Monday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

PAGASA said the center of Carina was last sighted 420 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan as 4 p.m.

It is packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center with gustiness of up to 150 kph.

PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Batanes, the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gattaran, Baggao, Peñablanca, Lal-Lo, Gonzaga) including the eastern portion of Babuyan Islands (Camiguin Is., Babuyan Is.), and the northeastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon).

The said areas will experience wind speeds of 39 kph to 61 kph.

Carina is bringing 100-200 mm of rain to the extreme northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan and 50-100 mm of rain to Babuyan Islands and the eastern portions of mainland Cagayan and Isabela on Monday until Tuesday, according to PAGASA.

The weather bureau also warned that rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly susceptible to such hazards.

Carina is forecast to move generally north-northwestward from Monday evening until Tuesday.

It will remain far from the country's landmass and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning.
