MANILA — A group on Sunday staged a protest at Quezon Memorial Circle to voice their opposition against the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites in the Philippines, which they fear could become the target of nuclear attacks.

The EDCA is an accord signed between the Philippines and the United States in 2014 that seeks to deepen the defense cooperation of the Mutual Defense Treaty.

The US has rotation access to a total of nine sites in the Philippines under the agreement.

The protestors voiced concerns over the dangers posed by nuclear arms and the geopolitical tensions surrounding EDCA.

The demonstration, organized by the AI Movement group, emphasized the urgent need for global peace and cooperation.

They criticized the presence of EDCA sites in the Philippines, alleging that these locations could become targets for nuclear attacks.

They pointed to claims made by Senator Imee Marcos about the alleged targeting of these sites by Chinese Dongfeng Missiles.

"Ang lahat ng problema ng lipunang ito ay walang patutunguhan kung di natin bibigyan pansin 'yung nakamamatay na mga armas nukleyar na nakatutok sa ating bansa," the group said.

"Ano pa ang kagutuman, ang kahirapan kung walang kapayapaan na magbibigay sa atin ng panahon upang ayusin ang mga problemang ito?"

Posters held by demonstrators bore slogans such as "Peaceful coexistence and not major power competition" and "No to EDCA Proxy war."

They stressed their stance against what they view as the militarization of Philippine soil in the name of international alliances.

The group’s concerns extend beyond security threats, with accusations directed toward global dominion.

"Di ba't lalong manggagalaiti ang Tsina at Rusya sa mga pinaggagawa ng pamahalaan natin?" they said, highlighting the perceived diplomatic consequence of military agreements.
