MANILA — Incoming Department of Education Secretary, Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara hopes to build on the legacy of his predecessor, Vice President Sara Duterte as he prepares to take the helm of the agency later this month.

Angara thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the appointment, revealing the president first spoke to him about the job last Sunday.

"Well siyempre nagagalak ho tayo dito sa pagtiwala sa atin ng ating pangulo but at the same time time medyo it's a big challenge so kailangan mag-aral at magtrabaho na ho tayo ng husto," Angara said. "Well I was told that I was being considered and I had a conversation with the president about 2 days ago and he asked about my plans sa education but at the end of the meeting I wasn't really sure that I was his choice so I was waiting actually and this morning I was told to submit certain documents and that I would likely get it already."

However he is not yet sure if he will start as soon as Duterte relinquishes the position on the 19th or if the government will wait for confirmation by the Commission on Appointments when the 19th Congress opens its 3rd regular session on the 22nd.

"I have to check on that but ideally we'd like to ensure that there is no break in the at the helm of DepEd so it's up to the president if he wants to appoint me immediately or if he wants me to sit immediately or if he wants an OIC but we'll follow and of course we'll respect the vice president has stated her resignation July 19 and we'll be coordinating with her for the next steps," Angara said.

Tatanungin natin ano yung mga priorities at ano yung talagang kailangan tutukan of course yung school opening di na rin nalalayo at yung Palarong Pambansa is ongoing of course so yung mga urgent concerns of the department i think for the next month," Angara explained.

"I think yung opening of classes is crucial, of course pursuing some long-term reforms and of course the president also mentioned his concern about the curriculum and our test results. I think he wants us to work on improving those and the quality of education," Angara said.

Angara said the classroom shortage, the problems with educators benefits and welfare as well as the results of assessment tests are important challenges he must face, but he stressed the needs to be creative in seeking solutions.

Nabanggit niyo importante yan yung PISA results I think that reflects on the quality of education tapos yung sa classrooms, we'll ask help from Congress at the same time we are open to dapat siguro we're also creative in looking for solutions. We'll look towards the private sector, also we have certain laws which can help and policies which can help address yung adopt a school program po ng department merong ganoon eh where the private sector can adopt some classrooms. We can make a dent, a meaningful, have a meaningful result dito,"Angara said.

"Ang maganda diyan marami ang nagsalitang experto at maraming nagsabing willing silang tumulong so yun ang advantage natin bilang kalihim and of course yung suporta ng ating pangulo at ng ating mga kasamahan sa Kongreso. Importanteng importante yan so a lot of their recommendations are already there and we just have to act on them so definitely we will work very well with the experts with our elected officials, elected and appointed officials in bringing the presidents policies to the people,” Angara said.
