MANILA – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday said First Lady and freshly-minted Auxiliary Vice Admiral Liza Araneta-Marcos would not be deployed to the West Philippine Sea.

Speaking in a media forum in Manila, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said the PCG Auxiliary, as a voluntary organization, is not usually deployed in “actual coast guard operations.”

“They are not actually deployed in actual coast guard operations… They are supporting different functions like coastal clean-ups, humanitarian assistance,” Tarriela told reporters.

But he said Mrs. Marcos act of wearing a PCG uniform boosts the morale of Filipino sailors in the West Philippine Sea.

“Having the first lady wear the same uniform that we wear is really something that will boost the morale of our coast guard sailors deployed in the West Philippine Sea,” he said.

The PCGA is an unarmed, voluntary uniformed non-government organization that assists the PCG in the promotion of safety of life and property at sea, preservation of the marine environment and its resources, conduct of maritime search and rescue, and maintenance of aids to navigation, among others, according to its website.

Mrs. Marcos on Tuesday  officially joined the PCGA with an honorary rank of vice admiral on board the BRP Gabriela Silang.

“The Philippine Coast Guard is very happy about it. Imagine the first lady of our republic is joining the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary as one of our volunteers. We see it as a support of the first family recognizing the effort of the Philippine Coast Guard as we perform our patriotic duty in the West Philippine Sea,” Tarriela said.

In his speech during the donning and oath-taking ceremony, PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan said Mrs. Marcos can help the PCGA as a “reinforcement” as her “mere presence exudes strength and compassion that drive actions and inspire results.”

“Recently, the First Lady has participated in the rehabilitation of the Pasig River, which is in tune with the PCG’s efforts to preserve our rivers and seas. Like the Philippine Coast Guard, the First Lady embodies the highest ideals of service, dedication, and patriotism, and does so with unmatched grace and sophistication,” said Gavan.
