MANILA — The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) on Wednesday flagged social media influencers allegedly using their platforms to promote illegal online gambling websites that may target the youth.

The House Committee on Public Order and Safety and the House Committee on Games and Amusements are conducting a joint investigation into crimes linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs).

During its presentation, Pagcor said one of the emerging challenges in the gambling industry is the "rapid growth of illegal casinos through social media."

"Maraming influencers ang gumagamit ng platforms nila such as Facebook, Tiktok, Youtube to encourage prospective players to try their luck in illegal platforms, so pino-promote po nila ang websites or isang laro like 'wheels of whatever' kahit walang lisensya sa Pagcor," said Jessa Fernandez, Pagcor assistant vice president and head of its overseas gaming licensing division.

Fernandez said these gaming platforms are unregulated and offer no protection to its players. Worse, they could push the youth to try out gambling.

"Itong mga illegal game offerings na mukhang legal but they have no protection for the players who will pay in the platform, walang contribution sa government, walang customer verification, so marami pong mga kabataan na maaaring makapaglaro sa illegal platforms," she said.

Fernandez did not identify how many influencers were engaged in such operation.

House Public Order panel chair Rep. Dan Hernandez then asked Pagcor to submit to them the names of identified influencers.

“Submit to us para we can coordinate with the BIR and also DICT para we can take action against these people,” he said.

On Tuesday, Pagcor reported that about 1,954 illegal online gambling platforms remained active after 5,793 of them were blocked in the past 2 years.

Pagcor earlier said that its crackdown against illegal gaming operators is largely dependent on law enforcement agencies since it has no police powers.
